The village took its name from a rare natural phenomenon. At the beach, you can enjoy your swim under the shade of the trees,
taste fresh fish at picturesque tavernas, and experience the warm hospitality of the locals.

Almyropotamos is the northernmost village of the Municipality of Styra, bordering the Municipality of Dystos. It is a village of beautiful traditional houses, built amphitheatrically above the Dipotamos valley. It boasts one of the most stunning coastlines in Evia, home to the picturesque and growing tourist settlement of Panagia, where the natural springs of Almyropotamos flow into the sea. A ferry service also operates here, connecting Almyropotamos with Agia Marina.

In the Dipotamos valley, the University of Athens conducted paleontological research from 1916 to 1966, which yielded highly significant findings. Specifically, fossils of 28 animal species belonging to the so-called "Pikermi fauna" (8-13 million years old) have been discovered. These include hipparions, deinotheres, mammoths, antelopes, and more. Many of these findings are currently on display at the Paleontological Museum of the University of Athens in Goudi.

Heading towards Karystos, just 15 minutes from Almyropotamos, we encounter Styra. It is well worth witnessing the sunset there, as it is one of the most beautiful in the Euboean Gulf. We head uphill towards the "Dragon Houses" (Drakospita) of the surrounding area and the peak of Mount Ochi—small stone structures that were inhabited since before the 7th century BC. Continuing towards Marmari, the "Megali Ammos" (Great Sand) beach is a standout feature, as are the ancient quarries in the Kionas area.

Opposite of Styra, we find the Petalioi, a cluster of nine small islands in the middle of the sea. After Marmari, we reach Rouklia, where we leave the car and continue on foot to explore the Dimosari Gorge and discover its springs at the summit of Giourda.

Before taking the road back, our final stop is Karystos. A visit to the Archaeological Museum and a tour of the imposing Castello Rosso (Red Castle) are a must. Slightly further down, we discover the old watermills at the Platanistos stream. And so, we return filled with unique imagery, ready to rest and share our experiences.

On the other side now, heading towards Aliveri and just 15 minutes from Almyropotamos, we can visit the Dystos wetland, which hosts unique bird species every year depending on the season. In winter, the surrounding mountains are covered in snow, allowing visitors to experience the rare beauty of snow that often reaches right down to the water's edge, as Almyropotamos is enclosed by mountains.

Something you must not forget to visit is Agios Dimitrios beach, also known as Chrysi Ammo (Golden Sand), where the eucalyptus trees along the shore provide a unique natural shade for you to enjoy. You should also make sure to see the centuries-old olive trees located near the Panagia Church; and with a little patience, at the saltwater river flowing from the mountain slope, you will spot the eels moving back and forth between the river and the sea.

How to get here

To reach Almyropotamos, you need 40 minutes from Athens International Airport (El. Venizelos) to the port of Agia Marina in Marathon. From there, by ferry boat, you cross to Nea Styra or Almyropotamos in 40 minutes, and in 5-10 minutes you reach the Windmills.
